Walk 6...

Harthope Valley. 12km (7.5 miles); 560m ( 1850 feet) of ascent; 6.5 hours duration. Meet View Mapat Wooler Car Park or at the start of the walk

We walk out of the beautiful Harthope Valley and climb to get splendid views all round. According to one source the Harthope Valley was formed by a geological fault line and then scoured out by successive Ice-Age glaciers. We will walk up Hedgehope Hill (714m/ 2356feet) slowly, since it is very steep in parts, with views of the Cheviot (814m/ 2690 feet) on our right. These two hills once formed part a great volcano which erupted some 400 million years ago. Rocky crags along the way date back to this volcanic era. After reaching the summit we walk over some boggy ground across Open Access land before descending into the Harthope Valley which we will follow for our return journey. Herons are often to be seen in the upper reaches of this river valley.
