Walk 3...

Northern Cheviots. 13 km (8 miles); 450m (1500 feet) of ascent; 5 hours duration. Meet View Mapat Wooler Car Park or at the start of the walk.

We commence the walk with the steep ascent of an Iron Age hillfort which gives its name to a battle between the Scots and English Armies in 1402. From the top there are splendid views over Wooler to the coast and northwards over the River Glen and River Till valleys. Looking west we can see Yeavering Bell, another hill fort, which we will climb en-route and which rises above an Anglo Saxon centre called Ad Gefrin (600 AD). This is the largest hillfort in the Cheviots and is around 2 500 years old. The name 'Yeavering Bell' means 'the hill of goats' and even today wild goats roam these hills. Lapwings, curlews and kestrels are usually visible. Fine views all round including towards the Cheviot (815 m/2 690 feet) itself.
