Walk 2...
Breamish Valley. 8 km (5 miles), 230 metres (760feet) of ascent; 3.5hours duration. Meet
at Ingram Car Park.
This walk starts from the car park at Ingram on the delightful River Breamish. Since Ingram is neither close to Wooler nor to Rothbury you may join the walk at Ingram. I have in mind visitors to the area who may be staying nearby. We follow a route that takes us to four Iron Age hill forts, past Bronze Age burial sites and prehistoric and mediaeval cultivation terraces. Getting up two of the hillforts is a little on the strenuous side. The hill forts are typically on exposed hills and take the form of circular ramparts made of earth and stone but what was it that led people to construct them some 2300 years ago? I will also take you to what I call 'the secret bluebell valley' which at its best is unmissable. Bluebells are often a sign of ancient woodland. At the end of our walk we can spend some time in the National Park Visitors' Centre which has an excellent exhibition of 4000 year old artefacts found in a nearby Bronze Age burial site.
