A tailored-guided walk

May 11th, 2012

On this occasion I  had to meet a request for a 4 hour walk with some ridge walking ……. so we headed out to Upper Coquetdale. There is nothing like Sharp Edge in the Cheviots but there is some good ridge walking. Wonderfully warm with outstanding views. My dog Bobby came along on this one…he likes the soft going. We could see in the distance Wyndy Gyle, which groups ascend,  when taking my  Upper Coquetdale guided walk. Great day.

Customer Feeback

May 4th, 2012

I was pleased to receive this feedback from a customer following last weekend’s guided walk in the Northern Cheviots.

Dear Roy

Really can’t thank you enough for our walk yesterday. It was a privilige to experience this little part of the world from a totally different perspective…such diverse landscape, such stunning views, wonderful wildlife, flowers and also to share your incredible knowledge of the hills, history and pre-history of the area.

Looking forward to walk on 23rd May and hoping for a little sunshine again.

Lucky with the weather

May 1st, 2012

We’ve just had the wettest April since records began but for last weekend’s guided walk it was fine! Phew..a bit of kuck there then!! We saw buzzards, a kestrel, heard and saw curlews and grouse and found a 15cm common lizard along the way. The cotton grass is emerging and so is the tormentil; vetch and violets too. Of course the views were great.

Although we walked in the rain it did give rise to some ‘atmospheric’ views. This is the ‘channel rock’,marked with cups and channels some 5000 years ago, with the mist rising from the River Coquet in the background.

Walk 8. Sacred Simonside. New for 2012

April 21st, 2012

Simonside rainbow

A lovely moderate walk out of Rothbury  over farmland, moors and the wonderful Simonside ridge. About 13.5 km or 8.5 miles with a height gain of around 350m. We’ll take in some wonderful views  and ponder over the meaning  of neolithic rock art. We’ll also see bronze age cists and an imposing Iron Age hillfort. Due to the preponderance of these ancient  remains it has beeen suggested that Simonside had a special significance in the landscape.

There is much more to the Simonside hills..not least the wonderful blanket bog, amazing erosion patterns in the sandstone rock and more!!!

The price per person is £10. The walk duration is around 5.5 hours.

The walk leaves Rothbury every Thursday in July and August (except Aug. 9th)

If you would like to book a place please call me.

St Cuthbert’s Way

March 14th, 2012

I was fortunate to be invited to a meeting with the management group of St Cuthbert’s Way yesterday. Also in attendance were representatives of businesses that rely on  walkers for custom such as hotels and cafe owners. It was a privilige to meet Ron Shaw who devised the walk back in 1995.

Two of my walks make use of S Cuthbert’s Way namely Walk 3 (Northern Cheviots) and Walk 4 ( College Valley). Following this meeting Iam going to plan a few excursions to St Cuthbert’s Way for those of you who would like to leave the ‘beaten track’ and see some exceptional points of interest. As things stand I am also willing to guide walkers through sections of the path too. I’ll post more soon. Meanwhile here are some images that bring back happy memories of walking on or close to this long distance trail.
